Faith Over Fear

What does faith over fear mean?

Faith over fear means to operate in faith rather than in fear. Choosing faith over fear can unlock many opportunities that you never knew existed. Think of the father of faith, Abraham. Abraham operated in faith with no physical evidence whatsoever of how blessed he was going to be. He walked in faith and became blessed beyond measure as a result.

Fear can be caused by facing the unknown. If you look at Biblical examples such as Abraham, he lived a life of walking and living in the unknown. Yet, he had the type of faith that could move mountains. The point is: we don’t always have the answers or a clear-cut plan, and that’s okay! That’s when you have to utilize the faith that God has blessed you with and just go for it! That’s what living a life of faith over fear is all about.

David’s Faith Greater Than Fear

For 40 days the giant, Goliath taunted the Israelite army challenging any of them to step forward and fight. The entire Israelite army was terrified, including its leader at the time, Saul. As Goliath continued to defy them, the war remained stagnant because their army was operating in fear, rather than in faith. All of this changed, though, when David heard Goliath’s taunting.

God placed David in the right place at the right time. Upon hearing Goliath’s defying words, David took it upon himself to take him up on his challenge. David wasn’t even supposed to be on the battlefield to hear Goliath’s words, let alone to fight him. But God’s provision is awesome and His timing is so perfect.

Anyone with eyes could see that in comparison to Goliath it looked as if David couldn’t stand a chance. However, David managed to convince Saul that he could not only fight Goliath, but could kill him as well. David let him know that he was a shepherd, and anytime an animal took his sheep, he managed to kill them with his bare hands and successfully rescue his sheep. This was enough to convince Saul to put him on the battlefield to go against Goliath.

…

The moments leading up to the fight, David’s faith was so amplified that he began telling his opponent exactly how he would defeat him. He claimed victory and gave glory to God by saying that the Lord would to deliver him from Goliath just as He did with the lions and bears he had fought. David was so right!

As they ran towards each other for battle, David pulled out a sling shot and hit Goliath in the forehead with a rock. It caused Goliath to fall face forward to the ground. He then miraculously killed Goliath in front of both armies. David’s strong act of faith caused the Israelites faith to be restored and go after the Philistines to fight. In the end, the Israelites won the battle. David’s bold faith won a war that was stacked against him and the Israelite army. Had David been paralyzed in fear like everyone else, then the Israelites history would’ve been drastically different. They would’ve lost the war and became enslaved to the Philistines, but all it took was David to have faith over fear to change the trajectory of the Israelites future. Thank God for David’s faith!

What is an example of faith over fear

David’s victory over Goliath was a huge turning point in Israel’s history. It marked the beginning of David’s kingship over Israel. David could’ve never experienced such a victory had he been fearful with Goliath like the rest of the Israelite army. Don’t get me wrong, Goliath was very intimidating. Standing at 9 feet tall with body armor weighing the size of a whole human—125 pounds—I can see how everyone was afraid of him. However, David believed in himself and his ability to fight and overcome Goliath because of his previous experience with conquering wild animals. His belief in himself and God paid off majorly and gave the Israelites victory over the Philistines.

Who in the Bible had faith over fear?

Many people in the Bible had faith over fear. Daniel, King David, and Esther did to name a few. Their stories are so inspirational because they all defied the odds that were stacked against them and came out victoriously. Glory was brought to God and His miraculous saving power, as a result of their bold actions. Here’s a quick summary about their victory over fear.

  • Daniel showed his faith over fear when he refused to pray to another God despite the King’s decree. As a result, he was thrown inside a lion’s den, then was miraculously saved by God. Daniel stayed faithful to God and God in turn stayed faithful to him.
  • In an attempt to save her people from death, Esther put herself at risk for death to do what was right. Although she was married to the King, she didn’t have free will to approach his inner court without first being summoned, otherwise she could’ve been put to death. Esther risked it all and, in the end, the king did not put her to death and she saved the lives of many Jews from death.
  • David’s faith over fear was shown when he bravely fought Goliath. As big as Goliath was in comparison to David, one would think David would’ve been petrified! Fortunately, things turned out well for David and he defeated Goliath, which resulted in the Israelites winning the war against the Philistines.

3 Ways to have faith over fear

  1. Sit in silence to quiet your mind. Let your mind free itself from any doubt by allowing yourself to release your fear and worry. Communicate your fear to God and ask Him to remove it from your mind, heart, body, spirit, and soul. Ask the Lord to kill and destroy the root of your fear and replace it with an abundance of faith. Next, nourish and replenish your mind with scriptures aimed at faith.

  1. Change your perspective. Sometimes you may be looking at a situation all wrong. A fresh new perspective is all that’s needed to get you on the right track. Seek God and ask for a change of perspective and for wisdom on the matter. Everything isn’t always what it seems to be. Just because you think something is one way, it may be an entirely different way in the spiritual realm. Think of Job. He lost everything and went through many trials, but behind the scenes he was really just being tested. He couldn’t see that of course, but that goes to prove that all you need is a shift in perspective. Try to stay hopeful and positive and know that all things happen for the greater good.

  1. Face your fear! I used to be really afraid of horses because they were so big and I always thought they’d bite me. Now, I’m no longer afraid of them because I faced my fear and forced myself to ride one. As I rode the horse, I felt exhilarated and empowered. I began to realize that there’s no reason that I should be scared of a horse. After conquering my fear, I continued to challenge myself and it left me with a can-do attitude and feeling more empowered than ever!

Faith Over Fear Scriptures

  • 1 Samuel 17:45-46, “David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me…”
  • 1 Samuel 17:47, “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
  • 1 John 4:4, “Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.”
  • Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
