faith while waiting

The longest waits can sometimes indicate a huge promise, breakthrough, or blessing is on the way. A good Biblical example of this can be seen when examining Joseph. Joseph went through many unexpected hardships after God showed him a prophetic dream.

As years rolled by, it looked as if his dream had no possible way of coming into existence with the direction his life was taking. But… during his 13 year wait for the dream to come into fruition, God suddenly delivered on His promise to Joseph.

Out of the blue, Joseph became the second-in-command of Egypt, just as his dream indicated. His long wait came with a powerful purpose behind it, that made all his suffering so worth the wait.

In this post, you are going to learn how to have faith while waiting on God, how to strengthen your faith while waiting on God, what to do while waiting on God, and much more.

After reading this post, you’ll know 7 things to do while waiting on God, and 7 things not to do while waiting on God.

This post is all about faith while waiting on God.

Faith While Waiting

How to wait on God

Reflecting on the goodness of God and prayer will help you a lot during your wait. We must always remember His goodness to us and others and how faithful He is to His people and His word.

God’s word is filled with many scriptures that gives us a clear peak into God’s character and His ways. For instance, Psalm 84:11 says, “…no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.” This is one of many powerful scriptures you can lean on as you wait.

Another vital aspect of waiting is to remain patient and full of faith. Keeping your faith strong although you don’t see the physical manifestation of your desires, is very important during a season of waiting.

In order to keep your faith strong, you must edify yourself with the Word of God. Reading and referencing scripture are good places to start, because the Bible is filled with valuable insight about: God, His promises, and how He operates. It’s good to know and have a refresher about what His word says especially during seasons of waiting when you need it most.

How to strengthen your faith while waiting?

When strengthening faith while waiting, you have to read or hear the word of God, so that His word can get instilled in your heart.

God’s word says, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” I can vouch for that being very true, because what made me believe in God before I became a believer, was hearing about Him. If I didn’t first hear about Him, then I wouldn’t have had faith in Him.

It was also exploring His word through reading the Bible and learning about what ancient believers went through and how good He was to them, is what caught my attention. Ultimately, that was enough to reel me in and strengthen my faith in the beginning of my walk with God. And, as I continued to read and get acquainted with scripture, my faith skyrocketed.

The best ways to strengthen your faith while waiting on God is: to edify yourself by reading the Bible and staying in communication with God through prayer.

What to do while waiting on God

There’s a number of things that you can do while waiting on God, but the single most important thing is to: have unwavering faith in God. Just because you don’t see anything happening in the physical realm yet, doesn’t mean that it’s not going to happen.

Joseph had a prophetic dream and for 13 years he didn’t any signs of his dream coming true, until one day, it actually did become a reality. Unexpectantly, Joseph’s life changed in the blink of an eye. It was so sudden, but after a 13-year wait, God fulfilled the same dream that Joseph had to wait 13 years for.

7 things to do while waiting on God

  1. Have faith

Without faith you won’t make it far as a child of God because your faith is everything. Faith moves mountains, faith heals, faith opens doors that were previously shut, faith does a lot of good things. I always say, “faith is Heaven’s currency,” because trusting God will get you very far. So, don’t ever stop believing that He is in control and can do all things, because nothing is too hard for God.

  1. Fast

One of the best things you can do while waiting is to fast. Fasting shows God that you’re serious and mean business. When you abstain from food and seek God in prayer, you connect with Him on a much deeper level spiritually than you would if you weren’t fasting. Sometimes a hinderance or delay can only be fixed with fasting. In Mark 9:29, Jesus confirmed it when he said, “this kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

  1. Read the Bible

There are so many different stories in God’s word that you’ll be able to relate to. Those passages will uplift you and keep you going when you need it most, because you’ll realize that you aren’t alone and many others may have had it much worse than you. This will keep you going and serve as a reminder that even the ancients had to wait on God while keeping their faith strong. And you are no different.

  1. Pray

Alongside reading God’s word, another important thing to do while waiting is to pray. Prayer keeps God informed about your needs, wants, and desires. But not only does prayer keep God informed, but it also keeps us informed with His guidance, insight, desires, and will. During moments of prayer listen for that still small voice to give you helpful insight and guidance.

  1. Say positive declarations

You can say things like, “I call myself healed in the name of Jesus.” Because God’s word tells us that “by His stripes we are healed.” So therefore, we can confidently make a declaration that’s in alignment with God’s word. God’s word and ways are true and if His word says something, then we can declare it aloud. Because God is not a man that he shall lie, and neither is His word.

  1. Seek the Holy Spirit for insight

Let’s face it, we don’t always have all the answers. Seeking the Holy Spirit for insight can give us Godly revelation about what to do, rather than trusting our own self for guidance. The Bible tells us not to lean on our own understanding, so we should listen and seek the Holy Spirit instead of ourselves.

  1. Stay Positive

Keeping a positive outlook and attitude is a great thing to do while waiting. The Bible highlights how Joseph kept a good attitude during his hard time as a slave and prisoner. We can learn from Joseph that having a good attitude through hard times shows good character and a strong belief in God despite circumstances.

What not to do while waiting on God

      1. Complain

The children of Israel are the best example for what not to do while waiting on God. When God freed them from Egypt they constantly complained. It was their complaining and lack of faith that ultimately hindered them from reaching the Promised Land. So, they missed their blessing due to complaining. Don’t be like them!

  1. Stop believing

Having faith is fundamental to everything that has to do with God. It’s never a good idea to give up and stop believing, because that’s what the enemy wants you to do. The enemy knows that faith is vital during your wait. If you stop believing, then that’s basically telling God that you don’t believe He’s capable and you don’t believe that He is with you; both of which aren’t true at all. Don’t give up, for in due season you shall reap if you faint not.

  1. Become angry

Don’t let anger get the best of you. Remember anger is one of the seven deadly sins, and living in sin is the last thing you should do while waiting for God.

  1. Stop praying

You should never allow your communication with God to stop, especially when you need Him most. It’s our most trying and vulnerable times in life that should bring us closer to God. If you feel like your faith is decreasing while waiting on Him, then you most definitely need to seek God in prayer. Ask Him to increase and strengthen your faith as you wait for Him, and pray consistently without losing hope.

  1. Backslide

Don’t be tempted to backslide; this is exactly what the enemy wants us to do! The enemy wants to pull us far away from God, so as to hinder our blessings and God’s promises to us. Don’t fall for it! Instead show yourself faithful to God, just as He is to you.

  1. Idolize what you’re waiting for

Sometimes we can want something so bad, that we begin to place it before God, without even realizing it. So, in a sense, the thing that we greatly desire becomes a god, and that’s the worst thing we can do. God’s first commandment is that we should have no other gods before Him. In other words: we should place Him first before anything and anyone, and not the thing that we desire most.

  1. Become sad or depressed

Attitude is key when waiting on God. Allowing yourself to become sad or depressed is not what God wants for you. And being sad or depressed isn’t going to help or speed up the wait. Instead, it’ll only keep you in a gloomy state of mind with a constant negative outlook on your situation.

The pain of waiting on God

It can be painful, disheartening, and a hopeless place when you’ve been waiting on God. Especially if you’ve been waiting for a long time and don’t see any signs of change.

You can feel like giving up, but when that happens remember that even ancient believers with the most faith had to wait and they too were tried.

Read and reflect on others in the Bible who had to wait for long periods of time like Joseph, Abraham, Job, David, Jesus, etc. And remember that their wait had a divine reason and a purpose, that they didn’t understand while they waited.

But when the wait was over, a blessing was released and God’s plan was fully accomplished. So always keep in mind while you wait: in due season you shall reap, if you faint not.

In the next section of this article, I’ll give you a few helpful scriptures.

Waiting on God Verses

Psalm 27:14, “Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart. Wait, I say on the Lord.”

Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.”

Lamentations 3:25, “The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.”

Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah 30:18, “And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you. For the Lord is a God of judgement: blessed are all they that wait for him.”
