This 3 day fasting and prayer guide will show you how to fast and pray successfully. Let’s explore a 3 day fasting and prayer guide that’s designed to help you!

Fasting and prayer is a surefire way to gain access to God. I know this all too well, as I’ve been on many prolonged water-only fast.
God loves when we draw near to Him in fasting and prayer. It opens up doors, opportunities, and deeper ways to connect with God like never before.
Believe it or not, fasting is actually expected for every believer to do at some point in their walk with God. Jesus clearly states in Matthew 6:17-18, “but when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Notice Jesus didn’t say “if you fast,” which lets us know that there’s a level of expectation to fast, as believers of Jesus.
In this post you are going to learn how to fast and pray for 3 days and you’ll also learn 5 helpful fasting tips to help you as you fast and pray.
After reading this post, you’ll have the tools, resources, and information to apply, so you can successfully complete a 3 day water only fast.
This post is all about 3 day fasting and prayer.
The Best 3 Day Fasting and Prayer Guide
How do you pray and fast for days?
It can be overwhelming just at the thought of going three days without food. Most people think it’s hard but honestly, it’s not as hard as most people think, especially when you know how to fast correctly. It starts with mentally and physically preparing up to a week ahead of your fast, which I’ll get into more detail later on in this article. But for now, let’s focus on how to fast for each day.
Days 1-3:
- When you wake up, you should immediately drink a glass of water.
- Drink 8-16 ounces of water at the start of every hour, for up to 10 consecutive hours. This will keep your hunger at bay and begin cleansing your body from unhealthy toxins and pollutants.
- Drink extra water around the time(s) that you would normally eat. You’re more likely to be hungry around those times because your body has developed a routine of eating a meal during those times. Take that time instead to drink more water and focus more on God to relieve your mind and body from focusing on hunger or food cravings.
- At the start of your day, do some type of engaging activity with God. This can range from: prayer, praise, worship, mediation, reading the Bible, or even listening to a sermon. For example: Praise God, through verbal praises that highlights His goodness or sing songs that focuses on the goodness of God.
- Focus on prayer multiple times throughout the day. I usually pray no less than three times a day when I’m fasting. That will keep you in contact with God and serve as a reminder as to why you’re fasting. Prayer plays a huge role in fasting because it’s how we communicate with God.
- Take time daily to reflect and write down: what you prayed for that day, how your day went, how you feel, what you did for the day, if you received an answered prayer, if the Holy Spirit spoke to you, etc. All of this is very effective at keeping you motivated to fast.
Days 1-3 Continued:
- Read the Bible daily. If any passage or story sticks out to you, then read it. Also, take the time to contemplate about what you learned from that story or passage. Because you can read the same story several times, but when you fast and read it, sometimes you’ll gain fresh revelation and learn something that you hadn’t previously realized before.
- Aim to listen to at least one really good sermon each day of your fast. You’ll be surprised at how much insight you’ll receive, and you’ll learn from someone who’s more developed in the word of God than you are. It’ll also help you elevate your perspective and knowledge of God and His word.
- Don’t eat anything at all, and don’t drink anything besides water during your three days fasting and prayer. However, if your job requires you to be really active and do physical labor then I suggest adding a zero-calorie electrolyte powder or liquid to your water (which can be found at a local store, online, or Amazon), so you won’t feel exhausted and fatigued while working. But if your job doesn’t require physical labor and it’s more sedentary, then stick with the water only option without the electrolyte powder or liquid.
- Do not exercise, save that for when you’re not fasting.
- Repeat these tips for each day of your fast. And each day will get easier and easier for you.
How to fast correctly for God?
The purpose of fasting is to abstain from food. The word fast (translated to tsom or tsum) in Hebrew means, “to cover one’s mouth or to abstain from food.” In order to fast correctly for God, one must stop eating, prioritize prayer, praise, worship, studying His word, and seeking God wholeheartedly. That’s the type of fast that attracts God. As we fast, we draw near to God and as a result, He draws near to us. Fasting allows us to be intimate with God through communication (prayer), nourishment (reading the Bible), glorification (praise/worship), and purification (abstaining from food and worldly things).

3 Day Fasting and Prayer Fasting Tips
Prepare
days earlier than your actual fast. This allows your mind and body to transition into fasting much easier. It gives the body time to adapt to going without food, rather than doing it suddenly. The best way to prepare your mind and body is to begin eating one high protein-low carb meal a day, at or around the same time daily. I found it easiest to incorporate this method one week before my fast. It’s also a great idea to start drinking a glass or two of water every hour for 8-10 hours straight. Because that’s the amount of water that you’ll drink during your actual fast.
Remove
unnecessary distractions (i.e. social media, secular conversations, favorite tv shows, etc.). Fasting isn’t just about abstaining from food; it also involves abstaining from the things of this world. When you do that, it frees up your mind and heart so you can fully allow God in. This not only allows you to spend more time with God, but it cleanses you and provides a cleansed space for the Holy Spirit to dwell in. God loves cleanliness; He is a pure, righteous, clean God.
Abstain
from watching food-based videos. I know it can get a little hard to not think about food during your fast, especially the first few days as your body goes without it. However, a common thing people do when they fast is watch food videos on YouTube, Tiktok, Food Channel, etc.. But…don’t watch food videos, because it’ll make you focus on which foods you want to prepare and eat when you break your fast. And, that is not what your focus should be on while fasting. Your focus should be entirely on God.
Focus
100% on your fast. Remember that seeking God is the purpose of fasting. Work to renew your mind by constantly reading the Bible. This will help remove ungodly thoughts, ways, and behaviors as you ingest more of God’s word. The New Testament is a great place to start because it’s filled with rules for Holy living as a Christian believer, so that can be very helpful with renewing your mind. But you can start reading anywhere in the Bible, just as long as you’re reading and reflecting on God’s word.
Avoid
breaking your fast with junk, unhealthy, processed, fried, or fast foods. Eat whole foods instead. Opt for meals that provide an excellent source of nutrition. Meals with fruits, vegetables, lean meats, nuts, broth, and some dairy are best. As the body works to refuel itself, it’s best to refeed with the healthiest options and foods available.

3 Days Fasting and Prayer for Breakthrough
If you’re in need of a breakthrough, then here’s a prayer to pray during your 3 day fast:
God,
“Thank you, Lord, for all my blessings. Lord, I’m seeking you as I fast so that you can intervene in a situation that has been stuck at a standstill and not making any progress, despite all my efforts. This has greatly bothered me. I ask that you bless me with a much-needed breakthrough that only you can give and resolve this matter swiftly on my behalf. I’ve done all that I know to do; I’ve exhausted all my resources and abilities. Now I turn entirely to you, God.
Help me Heavenly Father, and do what I cannot do. Remove the barriers, obstacles, and hinderances that’s preventing me from receiving a breakthrough in this matter. Prepare the way and open the door for me to see the physical manifestation of what I ask for. Your word says knock and the door shall be opened, seek and you shall find, ask and you shall receive. Lord, I’m knocking, seeking, and asking. In the name of Jesus, I ask, that you turn this situation around in my favor and bless me with a breakthrough.
…
Forgive me for any and all of my sins Heavenly Father and cleanse me so that my prayers can reach your throne. Your word says to come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need. I need help with this issue Lord and I ask for you to work it out and handle it for me.
Lord, I ask that you keep me strong and focused entirely on seeking you without being distracted by worldly and secular things. I ask that you guide me as I fast, and if there’s anything or anyone that I should pray for during my fast, I ask that you bring it to my attention so I can pray for it. Word my mouth as I pray, so that I can see the physical manifestations of my prayers come to pass in the physical world. Let my prayers come into fruition and be answered by you Lord.
Let not my words return to me void, but let them accomplish all that which I please and and prosper whereto I send them, and I send them to you and you alone Lord.”
In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
