Fasting certainly has its benefits—especially during times of crisis. In life, there will be times when fasting and prayer is the only solution to our problems.

When you’ve prayed for the same matter time and time again with no results, then it just may be time fast. I know this all too well, as I’ve been on plenty of life-changing fast.

Fasting is like prayers on steroids, it adds a supernatural power to our prayers that unlocks deliverance, healing, revelation, and so much more. The biblical story of Queen Esther’s three-day fast clearly demonstrates the power of fasting.

In this post, you are going to learn about the power of fasting through Esther, 10 benefits of fasting, what Jesus said about fasting, and what God does when we fast.

After reading this post you will gain valuable insight about the power of fasting and its many benefits.

This post is all about power of fasting.

Power of Fasting in the Bible

During Queen Esther’s reign, the Jews as a whole were at risk of being totally annihilated. When Esther discovered the deadly plot against the Jews, she immediately went on a fast, which consisted of no food nor water for three whole days. Although Esther was Queen, she was not allowed to enter her husband’s inner court without first being summoned by him. The consequences of entering the inner court without being invited was death.

However, there was one exception to the rule. If the king extended his scepter when the unsummoned person approached him, then that individual’s life was spared from death. So, Esther went on a fast so that she would be able to convince her husband to help and stop the evil plot. She put her life on the line to save her people and herself.

After her fast, she approached the king without being summoned, and thankfully he extended his scepter to her, so that her life was spared. In the end, Esther and the Jews were saved and delivered from death because of the power of fasting. Esther’s story could’ve ended drastically different had the king not extended his scepter to her. Her life and every Jew would’ve been erased from history had the plot to kill all Jew’s was successful.

What are 10 Benefits of Fasting

  1. It builds your faith.

As you connect and spend more time with the Lord while fasting, you’ll notice your faith gets stronger. When you consistently nourish your mind with God’s word, sermons, prayer, and praise you’re literally resetting your mind and way of thinking. You begin to think in accordance to what His word says. As you read different biblical stories, you’ll be reminded of what His people went through and how God delivered them out of their trials and tribulations. You’ll see that nothing is too hard for God, and He will always make a way, even when it looks impossible.

  2. You receive revelation through the Holy Spirit.

Daniel is an excellent biblical reference for this benefit. He went on a 21-day partial fast and the insight and revelation that he initially desired, he received through fasting. Seeking God through fasting opens the door for Him to show us things which we didn’t know previously.

  3. You experience healing.

Fasting is a key component to healing. I’ve personally experienced healing when I went on an eleven-day water only fast. I was dealing with a lot of grief from losing my father, and I could not function in my everyday life without randomly crying and feeling physically exhausted. My memory was horrible and I kept forgetting to do regular daily task that I normally would do with ease. I wasn’t functioning properly and I sought God for healing. During those eleven days I prayed for healing my broken heart and when the fast was over, I felt much better and like my normal self again.

  4. You experience deliverance.

Just like Esther, the breakthrough that you’ve been desperately needing is definitely within reach when you fast. Fasting is capable of breaking strongholds, addictions, generational curses, and more. In Matthew 17:21, Jesus said, “this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting,” and He rebuked the demon from the boy who had seizures, and the boy was delivered from the demonic spirit.

  5. It resets your mind, body, and life.

Fasting clears your mind from toxic and sinful thoughts as you purify your mind with God’s presence and His word. When you’re finished fasting, you’ll want to keep engaging in a godly way of living and thinking. Your body will also feel better and lighter because you’ll lose weight too.

  6. You grow spiritually.

Fasting promotes spiritual growth. You can grow a lot from fasting because you’re constantly learning from God’s word. You learn His ways and how He desires for us to live as you spend more time reading the Bible and learning His ways.

  7. You gain strength spiritually and mentally.

When life leaves you feeling tired and worn out it slowly chips away at your strength. And, weariness begins to set in, but fasting can change that. It provides restoration and renewal, and rebuilds your strength, which will leave you feeling strengthened both mentally and spiritually.

  8. It increases your chances to hear from God.

When you draw near unto God, He will draw near unto you. Because fasting draws us closer to God, then we’re more likely to hear from Him via His Holy Spirit, dreams, visions, and more.

  9. You’re more likely to get answered prayers.

Fasting draws you near to God, and as a result you pray a lot more than you normally would. As you cleanse your mind and get rid of unwanted thoughts and worries, you pray more about them. God loves when we fast, and He sees the hard effort and sacrifice that we put into fasting. He honors it and is more likely to answer our prayers.

  10. You feel better.

Fasting cleanses not only your body, but your mind as well. Any thing or thought that weighed you down before fasting, will no longer feel like a burden to you mentally. You’ll experience peace as you surrender your stresses, worries, and cares to God, which will leave you feeling free, clear, and unburdened.

What does God do When We Fast

Fasting empowers our connection to God. It shows Him that we are deeply in need and only He can make the necessary changes to our situation. As a result, He acts and moves on our behalf according to His will. He answers prayers, He gives revelation, He heals, and He delivers us when we fast. Now that’s not to say that all of our prayers and needs will be answered and aided every time we fast, because some of our request may not be in His will for us. However, fasting most certainly intensifies our prayers and they’re more likely to be heard and answered by God when we do incorporate fasting.

What does Jesus say about Fasting

In Matthew 6:16 Jesus said, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

Notice he did not say “if you fast,” he said “when you fast.” Which insinuates that fasting is an act that is expected from followers of Jesus. He knew that fasting was needed to overcome strongholds and demonic forces. That’s why He told us in Matthew 17:21, “this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” His disciples’ prayers alone weren’t strong enough to deliver the results needed to destroy the demonic spirit that they encountered when He said that.
