Grief Prayers

Table of Contents:

What is a short comforting prayer for grief?

Father God,

“My heart is in agony right now, and only you can help me as I struggle with grief. I ask that you bring a strong source of comfort my way in any way that you see fit.

Heal me as I grieve my loss. Although grieving is a fact of life, I pray and ask that I don’t stay in this place long. Carry and bring me through this painful moment in my life, and help me get to the light at the end of the tunnel.

I love you, Lord and thank you for always being there for me.”

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Short prayer to comfort a grieving friend

God,

“I ask that you help my friend as he/she goes through the process of grieving. Be a pillar of strength and comfort for him/her during this rough time.

Help them see death through a new lens as you work on their inner healing. Be with them and heal their broken heart, I pray.

Thank you so much for your goodness, Lord.”

In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Short prayer for grieving family

Lord,

“I lift the __[insert name here]___ family into your hands and ask that you cover them in this dark moment of their life. Release your angels over them and I plead the blood of Jesus over their minds, hearts, spirits, and souls.

Send forth your healing power and heal them as they grieve for the loss of a loved one. Uplift and strengthen them as you restore their joy and happiness.”

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for grief and strength

Lord,

“I come to you in distress and great need. For my entire life you have been my saving grace, rock, and deliverer. And right now, is no different.

God I’m suffering the loss of someone whom I loved and cared about and it’s hard for me to carry on with my life. My strength feels gone and I’ve become weak. This has become too much for me to bear.

Father God, intervene and help me, as I can’t make it through this alone. I really do need you, Lord. I pray that you give me strength and hope.

Take my countenance from sad to joyous. Pick me up and show me the way. I ask for total and complete restoration of peace, joy, happiness, and cheer.

Enable me to live my life without being depressed, sad, or angry. Help me to overcome this loss and heal me from the pain that I feel. Deliver me from the pain and sadness that I feel and help me to victoriously move forward, happily.

Thank you, Lord for all my blessings and I thank you that I have you to depend on. Please answer my prayer, I ask.”

In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Healing prayer for someone who lost a loved one

God,

“I thank you that I’m able to intercede for __[insert name here]___. I pray that __[insert name here]___ gets better and starts to show signs of major healing. Ease the hurt, pain, and distress of __[insert name here]___ loss.

Make it easier for him/her each day. Help __[insert name here]___ recover and live to tell of your goodness and how you brought him/her through.

God, you are so good and worthy of all praise, for there is nothing too hard for you, Lord. Pull and tug on __[insert name here]___heart so that he/she begins to seek you, because only you alone Lord, can save him/her. Help __[insert name here]___ see the positive side of this situation. And let him/her learn and grow from this.

Bring him/her peace and comfort. Engulf him/her in your love. Send the right people his/her way to speak powerful words of encouragement and wisdom when he/she needs it most.

I ask that you keep __[insert name here]___ sane, especially during this tough time in his/her life. Remove distracting and negative thoughts that are not of you Heavenly Father.

And take __[insert name here]___ to the right information that’ll help, teach, uplift, mature, and encourage him/her during this time.

I kindly ask that you completely heal __[insert name here]___ in every area of his/her life: mentally, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, physically, etc. and give him/her strength and protection as he/she heals and recovers.

I also ask that you forgive __[insert name here]___ for his/her sins, and help him/her become a better person.

Thank you for hearing my prayer for __[insert name here]___, and I pray that my prayer does not return to me void, but that it accomplishes all that which I please and prosper whereto I send it. And I send my prayer to you dear Lord, and you alone.”

In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

An Encouraging Word for People Grieving

When people say it’ll get better, it truly will. I know it seems impossible to see right now, but little by little and day by day it will get easier.

When grief strikes, we become stuck in this weird roller coaster of negative emotions that’s almost never-ending, but guess what? There’s light and happiness at the end of the tunnel.

How do I know this? Because there was a time when I lost my father and it seemed as if my whole world stopped and came crashing down. I didn’t think I would ever smile again, let alone be happy again.

And I carried on like that for quite some time. But it was when I prayed and sought God routinely, that He restored my happiness. Although I still missed my father and nothing could ever replace him, God positively shifted my perspective on death and whenever I thought of him, I became happy and smiled again.

Instead of being sad, I became grateful. Grateful that I knew him, grateful that he was my dad, and very grateful that I was his daughter.

Once the temporary sadness, depression, and anger of grief wears off… don’t worry, because a greater emotion is on its way, permanently. It’s called: gratitude.

In the next section of this post, I’ll give you a few helpful grief scriptures.
