Never Underestimate the Power of Prayer
Why is the power of prayer so powerful?
Prayer is so powerful because it’s our way of forming and maintaining a strong relationship with God. In prayer we can go to God about anything, be it good or bad. If we need something we go to God in prayer. Or if we just want to tell God how thankful we are for Him, then we do it through prayer. Prayer plays a large role in developing a deep relationship with our Heavenly Father.
A biblical example that shows why prayer is so powerful can clearly be seen in the story of Paul and Silas when they were publicly beaten then thrown into jail. Thankfully, Paul and Silas knew the value of prayer and didn’t underestimate it in one of their darkest times. Instead they utilized it to their advantage, and their prayers went on to initiate a miracle that saved several people and gave them a chance at salvation.

What weakens our prayer life?
The number one thing that weakens our prayer life is not praying. When you don’t spend time with God in prayer then how can your relationship grow?
Sometimes we get distracted with daily life activities but in order to have a good prayer life we must make prayer and time spent with God a priority.
Consistency is also key to having a good strong prayer life. It’s similar to experiencing gains and losses in your body when you exercise. Just like you build your muscles and lose weight by consistently exercising, prayer is also the same.
The more you pray, the stronger your prayer life will be, and the better your relationship with God will be.

What is the key to powerful prayer?
1. Having faith is the key to a powerful prayer
Scripture backs this in:
–James 5:15, “And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up…”
–In Matthew 17:20 when Jesus spoke to his disciples. “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
–And in Matthew 21:22 when Jesus spoke to his disciples about the fig tree. “If you believe you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
2. Also being and living righteously
Scriptures that support that being righteous is the key to a powerful prayer are:
–James 5:16, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
–Proverbs 15:29, “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayers of the righteous.”
3. As well as a sincere earnest prayer
Scriptures that support that being sincere and earnest is the key to a powerful prayer are:
–Hebrews 10:22, “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings…”
–Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

What blocks our prayers from God?
1. Lack of faith, doubt, and not trusting God
There isn’t a problem in this world that God can’t fix. Nothing is too hard for Him. However, as humans we tend to let our problems cloud our judgement and faith, which leads to a lack of faith in God. Not having faith in God will always lead to unanswered prayers because God wants us to trust Him just as His word states in Hebrews 11:6. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
2. Sin
Sin stands in the way and acts as an invisible barrier between us and God. God is Holy and desires for us to be and live righteously. Sin stands in the way of our relationship with God because it limits our access to Him. When we live a life of sin we can only go so far with God. I recall a time when I lived in sin and I never heard from God no matter how much I prayed. My prayers went unanswered for years. It wasn’t until I gave up sin and cleaned up my lifestyle that I began to hear from God and receive answered prayers.
3. Unrepentance
Oftentimes, unrepentance can easily be forgotten as something that blocks and hinders our prayers. But it definitely does. God wants us to confess our sins to Him, ask for forgiveness, and stop repeating the same sin. When we do that, we open the door to answered prayers. We should never let pride or unrepentance stand in the way of our prayer life.
4. Strife and Disagreements
Let me say this: God does not like strife! He loves peace and even goes so far as to associate His character with peace. He is a God who loves peace and He is the God of peace. In 1 Peter 3:7 it gives us a clear indication that discord will hinder your prayers, especially within a marriage. It says, “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”
What should we not do when praying?
When you pray you should never pray with doubt in your heart. Doubting that God can’t fix your problems, doubting that God isn’t real, doubting that your prayer will be answered, etc. When you pray you should remove all doubt from your mind, heart, spirit, and soul and believe 100% with your heart that God is real, he hears you, and he will answer your prayers.
In Matthew 6:5-7, Jesus warned us of what not to do when praying. Briefly, he tells us we shouldn’t pray publicly just to be seen by others. However, that’s not to say that we can’t pray with others at church or another public setting. But we shouldn’t do it to show off and be seen. He also instructed us not to use the same words repeatedly or empty words that means nothing.

Never underestimate the power of prayer Bible verse
Proverbs 15:8, “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.”
Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
James 1:6, “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.”
Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Matthew 6:8, “…For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
