In late 2021 I lost my close father, which sent me into a downward spiral. That experience alone almost took me out. I experienced a deep emotional turmoil like I’d never been through before.

I couldn’t think clearly, kept forgetting everything, felt physically weak, had many emotional outbursts, and so much more. What took me out of that dark space was prayer. If I wasn’t engulfed in prayer, then I wouldn’t have made it out of that painful experience.

It was when I began to pray continually is when I noticed a major change; I started to gain my power back. I thank God that I knew and believed that prayer was my weapon to defeat the negative feelings I felt. With time God healed my broken heart and I was able to overcome that devastating life-changing experience.

In this post, you will learn that there is power in prayer though a biblical example and a testimony about how prayer healed a deadly sickness.

After reading this post, you will know three benefits of prayer and why prayer is a powerful weapon against the enemy.

This post is all about power through prayer.

Power Through Prayer

Does prayer bring power?

Yes, it does! We can look to the biblical example in 1 Kings to learn that prayer does bring power; in fact, prayer has the ability to produce miracles. In the biblical account of 1 Kings 17, we see that Elijah makes a declaration that no rain will be produced for years until he commands it. And, his words proved to be true; the land experienced a drought because of lack of rain for three and a half years. However, after the three and half years passed Elijah said it would rain, and finally it did.

James 5:17-18 makes it very clear that the rain was withheld as a result of Elijah’s prayers. It says, “Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again, he prayed and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.” Elijah’s prayers produced a powerful miracle that had never been seen before. Why? Because of the powerful effect of prayer.

How powerful is the effect of prayer?

Ten years ago, I had a wonderful mechanic named Mike. Anytime my car needed repair he was my go-to person. Unfortunately, I had to move out of state, so my last time seeing him I let him know. He then gave me some really bad news about his health: He was battling cancer. The doctor also told him it was getting worst and that he didn’t have much time to live.

Fast forward to almost a month ago, I moved back to that city, walked into a convenient store, and guess who I saw? Mike! I couldn’t believe my eyes; I for sure thought he passed because of cancer. So, I hugged him and we talked. As we talked, I asked him how did he beat cancer. His answer went against all medical explanation.

He told me that one day his relative took him to church, and as he went to the altar for prayer he cried like a baby; then the pastor laid hands on him and prayed for his healing. As he received prayer, he said he felt a really strong hot sensation leave his body. Soon after, he went to the hospital for a checkup and the doctor alerted him that his cancer was gone! Mind you, he was in stage 3 or 4 cancer. His cancer was gone, not through medicine nor chemotherapy, but only through the powerful effect of prayer. Praise God!

Why is prayer a powerful weapon?

Prayer is a powerful weapon because it’s our method of communicating with God. Through prayer, we get the chance to express our true thoughts and feelings with Him. It’s a safe place where we can express our wants, needs, and desires sincerely.

Once we make ourselves clear through direct communication, it gives Him the ability to intervene and act on behalf of our prayers in a way that only He can. When God steps in for us, He has the power and authority to change our circumstances for the better. And that’s why prayer is so powerful because it taps into power, dominion, and authority that only belongs to God.

3 Benefits of prayer

  1. Opens doors that were previously closed. Simply put, some things will not change without prayer. You may be experiencing hinderance in an area of your life that only prayer can bring change to. When I dealt with grief, prayer opened the door for healing. When my mechanic, Mike, received prayer he too got the healing that he needed, through prayer. Prayer is life-changing and any believer that wants to see a positive change in their life should seek God through prayer.
  2. You become spiritually mature. The more you seek God in prayer the more you become aquatinted with Him. As a result, you start to worry less because you know that God is good and He works on behalf of His people. His word becomes instilled in your heart and it leaves you with a deep sense of security. As you mature, you don’t have to go looking for signs and wonders like you did when you were less mature. You’ll have an unexplainable deep-knowing that you’re on the right track without any proof. And, your reverence for God will grow deeper the closer you get to Him through prayer.
  3. It strengthens your faith. Prayer is a mighty faith builder! It’ll increase your faith in God when you begin seeing your prayers getting answered. Even when you don’t get answered prayers, it will not shake you and cause you to doubt God. Why is that? Because you’ve invested so much time into prayer that you’ll come to know and accept that maybe what you’re praying for isn’t in God’s will for you. And that’s okay.

In the next section of this article, I’ll give you a few helpful scriptures.
