No one ever taught me how to pray. So, for the longest time I thought I wasn’t praying correctly because I was never taught. It wasn’t until I went to a one-on-one prayer session that I learned that I actually did know how to pray.

The session went like this: I told an elder lady my prayer request, then we closed our eyes and held hands as she prayed. When she finished praying, she then told me to pray, and I responded, “I don’t know how to pray,” so she encouraged me to just try.

I started praying aloud and about two minutes into the prayer, she stopped me and said, “I don’t know who told you that you didn’t know how to pray, but honey, you know how to pray!” And she really emphasized that I knew how to pray. I began laughing and told her, “Oh, I thought I didn’t know how to pray.”

What I learned that day was priceless, and she really boosted my confidence in my prayers despite never being taught how to pray.

How to Start a Prayer Example

Starting a prayer with thanking the Lord for His goodness to you is an excellent way to start. For example, you can say, “Thank you Lord for all my blessings and for loving me because without you, I’m nothing.” It’s a great way to start your prayer like this because you’re first acknowledging Him and thanking Him for His goodness but also showing reverence for who He is.

You can continue to praise and give thanks to Him until you see fit. Also, you can say a lot more than the example given. Just say what comes to your mind and speak sincerely from the heart. A scripture that supports firstly thanking the Lord in prayer can be found in Psalms 100:4, which states, “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise! Give thanks to Him and praise His name.”

What are three examples of personal prayer?

After first praising and giving thanks to the Lord, you can begin telling Him your reason(s) for coming to Him in prayer. Whatever the reason is, remember to be an open book and don’t hold back, feel free to openly express yourself.

What I learned in my prayer session is that prayer is all about being earnest, sincere, and expressive. Prayer involves clearly expressing your true thoughts, feelings, and concerns to God so He can listen to your needs and desires and intervene for you.

Also, as you pray, quote scriptures from His word that supports your prayers. Speak His word back to Him. For instance, if you have an illness and you’re praying to be healed, you can say something like this:

“Lord, I ask that you heal my body from ____________. I know that you are more than capable of healing me Lord, as your word says that you can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us. I know and believe that by your stripes we are healed. Lord, your word says that you came so that we can have life and have it more abundantly. Heal my body so that I can have life more abundantly just as your word states.”

Lord,

“I admire you and thank you for always being with me. I desire to become more like you Lord, so I ask that you make me more like you. Mold and shape me to be the person you created me to be.

I ask that I continuously walk in love and forgiveness just as you would want me to. Let me be graceful and extend grace to others without being harsh, because we all fall short of your glory. So, any hatred, hostility, or grudges, that I harbor, I ask that you forgive me and remove it from me, so that I can be a living and walking representation of you Lord.

Help me grow in your word so I can live and apply it accordingly. I pray that you give me an excellent understanding of your word so that I can apply it and be a good role model to others.

Lord, I desire to gain deeper access to you, and I pray that as I draw near to you, that you draw near to me as well. Let me walk boldly and confidently into my purpose and enable me to fulfill my life’s purpose.”

2. Intercession Prayer Example for Spiritual Renewal

Heavenly Father,

“May all praise and glory go to you Lord. Thank you that I have an opportunity to pray to you on behalf of [insert person’s name here]. I see that [insert person’s name here] has gone astray. Convict [insert person’s name here] dear Lord, so that they can repent and ask you for forgiveness.

Place in them a desire to delve deeper into your word and your ways. Renew their mind and bless them with spiritual renewal. Turn their mind and heart back to you Lord. Take away their desire to live worldly and replace that with a desire to live in your ways instead.

Help [insert person’s name here] to become a Christ like version of themselves and live to please you, Lord. Change their ways and life for the better, and help them grow spiritually and become mature in your word. Intervene for their life and save their soul from the enemy and destruction.”

“Thank you for coming into my life and heart to save my soul. Thank you that I can experience what true salvation feels like. Lord, I don’t know how to pray, so I ask that you teach me. And bless me to learn how to pray correctly so that I can not only have a good relationship with you, but so that I can be a blessing unto others and help others who may not know how to pray as well.
