Who was Paul and Silas?

For starters, Paul and Silas were both believers of the Lord. Paul was an apostle and Silas was a member of the church who accompanied Paul as they preached the Gospel of Jesus.

One thing I find interesting about Paul, is that he was once an unbeliever who was heavily against the Church and took extreme measures against believers such as jailing them to stop the spreading of the Gospel.

It wasn’t until Jesus appeared and spoke to Paul in a vision that he had a change of heart and began believing, then ultimately preaching the Gospel.

God definitely works in mysterious ways, doesn’t He?

If He can change the heart of someone who relentlessly persecuted Christians for their beliefs then anything is possible and anyone can be forgiven and saved for their sins or wrongdoings.

The apostle Paul is a prime example.

What is the story of Paul and Silas?

Before Paul and Silas encountered imprisonment and a miraculous intervention from God, Paul was blessed to have a vision.

In the vision, a man begged him to come and help him in Macedonia. So, Paul and Silas headed to Macedonia with the intent to preach the Gospel. When they arrived, they encountered a slave girl who was a fortune-teller and had an ungodly spirit in her that could predict the future.

For several days, she followed them around as they preached the Gospel. However after several days, this girl became increasingly annoying as she continuously screamed and cried that Paul and Silas were the servants of God and were showing others how to be saved.

As she repeatedly screamed and cried the same things daily, Paul had finally had enough of her nonstop screaming and cast the demonic spirit out of her. When he cast the spirit out of her, she stopped screaming but had also lost the ability to fortune tell. That caused a major problem for her owners. Because when she could no longer predict the future, she could no longer earn money for her owners.

After realizing what happened, the girl’s owners became very angry with Paul and Silas and dragged them to the authorities and told them what happened.

…

Keep in mind, that the slave owners were Roman citizens and Paul and Silas were too, but the slave owners didn’t know that, which played a major role in what happened next…

The owners felt as if Paul and Silas were trying to change Roman culture to practice their Christian beliefs.

At the time, most Roman people didn’t practice nor believe in Christianity, so that caused a public uproar and many Roman citizens began to attack and viscously beat Paul and Silas with whips as they stripped them of their clothing.

Afterwards, Paul and Silas were thrown in jail with their feet shackled to heavy pieces of wood that restricted their movement.

I know the story of Paul and Silas sounds bizarre, because situations like this doesn’t happen nowadays, but in those times, this was something that was considered normal and socially acceptable.

What was the miracle of Paul and Silas?

After being brutally attacked then jailed Paul and Silas, prayed and sang to God. As other prisoners listened to them singing and praying aloud, out of nowhere a violent earthquake happened.

No one was hurt, but the earthquake broke every prisoner’s chains and miraculously caused all the prison doors to unlock and open.

Now, the prisoners could’ve taken matters into their own hands and escaped once they saw that their chains were broken and all the doors were opened, but instead they did the right thing and stayed in jail.

It was this very miracle that made the prison guard who didn’t believe in Jesus, begin to believe in Jesus and His miraculous power.

The guard was blessed to witness this and as a result he and his family were baptized and given salvation from the Lord.

What lessons can be learned from Paul and Silas?

Prayer is vital as we seek to make changes to our situation. Listed below are three important lessons you can learn from the story of Paul and Silas.

  1. God can turn negative circumstances into positive ones with prayer.

Things went horribly wrong for Paul and Silas after they made it to Macedonia. After Paul had the vision of the Macedonian man asking for help, I’m sure they did not anticipate being publicly beaten, whipped, stripped naked, then thrown in jail. How awful! However, look at all the good that happened as a result of the negativity they had to endure. The most important being, that an entire family of non-believers were saved and got the chance to experience salvation. God wants us all to be saved, even just saving one person brings great pleasure to God. Ultimately, the evil that they had to go through was worth it because a whole family got saved, as a result. How awesome!

…

Another good thing that came out of it, is that God produced a mighty miracle that imprisoned unbelievers got to witness.

I’m sure that after seeing something as mind-blowing as that, that it left unanswered questions in their minds that could not logically be explained. I find it hard to believe that there is no way that they weren’t somewhat swayed that Jesus is real after seeing that.

  1. Prayer can produce miraculous results.

Another thing I’m sure Paul and Silas weren’t expecting after praying, was an earthquake that freed them and every prisoner from their prison chains. Although none of the prisoners ran away, that miracle needed to happen to save precious souls. From that, you can learn that God will put his power on full display to save unbelievers and to remind believers that He hears their prayers and feels their pain. What if they were never wrongly beaten and jailed? Then others wouldn’t have been saved and got to experience the power of God.

It seems as if the vision Paul had was successfully carried out. Because not only was a man saved but an entire household was too, as a result of a miracle that was influenced by their powerful prayers to God.

…

  1. Pray even in unfavorable circumstances.

Even when it looks as if there is no way out of a situation, God can make the impossible very possible. God works in mysterious ways and we never know what His plans are to deliver us from unfavorable situations. As long as you know and believe that He can do all things and that nothing is too hard for Him, then ALWAYS prioritize prayer no matter what you’re going through. I promise, you will see a change! It may not happen immediately but it will happen if you hang in there, keep unwavering faith, and pray. Just take a lesson from the powerful prayers of Paul and Silas.

Helpful Scriptures

Here are some scriptures that will help on your walk with God.

Keep in mind that the wording of these scriptures may not be exactly the same in some Bibles, depending on the type (NIV, KJV, NLV, etc.) of Bible you read.

Please know that they all have the same meaning, but may be worded differently.

1 John 4:4

  • 1 John 4:4, “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.”
  • If you don’t fully understand what that scripture is saying, it means that God is greater than Satan. Because Satan will do everything to get you to doubt, lose faith, and quit believing. When you have those doubtful thoughts, remember the above scripture while knowing that God can override whatever evil Satan throws your way.

James 5:16

  • James 5:16, “The prayers of a righteous man availeth much.” This scripture means that a person who does good in the eyes of the Lord greatly pleases Him, and that person’s prayers are more likely to be answered as a result of living a godly righteous life.
  • It’s not to say that every prayer that a righteous person prays will be answered, it just implies that there’s a huge advantage in praying if God sees someone as righteous. Being righteous doesn’t only involve living a righteous lifestyle, but also making sure that your ways and heart is right as well. So, always seek to do the right thing and live a clean lifestyle. Biblical instructions on righteous living can be found in Colossians chapter 3, and 2 Timothy 2:14-26.

Ephesians 6:10-18

  • Ephesians 6:10-18, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
  • Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

This scripture perfectly sums up Paul and Silas’ experience from all perspectives, in the spiritual and the physical world.

Bonus: NIV Bible

There are a lot of Bibles available. But one Bible that is easy to understand is the New International Version (NIV). It’s an easy read that uses modern language, while it still maintains the original meaning of the Bible.

This affordable NIV Bible (this is an updated version; I have the old version) helped me understand the Bible a lot better than when I read King James Version (KJV). Because of its use of up-to-date wording and language.
