The Power of Prayer in the Bible
The power of prayer in a believer’s life
Prayer has definitely saved my life many times. There’s been times, as a young adult, when I aged out the foster care system and I couldn’t afford to pay my rent, electric, or water bill. It was tough! And I didn’t have a strong support system that I could rely on or go to, to ask for help.
What got me through was first my faith in God and knowing that he protects widows and orphans. But prayer is what sustained me and made my relationship with God strong. Consistently engaging in prayer brought the changes that I needed for every bad situation I found myself in.
When I needed my bills paid, I prayed and signed up for utility assistance through a charity organization. Thankfully they had enough funding to cover my need, which was rare at the time, but God gave me perfect timing and made a way for me. In the end, my lights and water bill got paid, and I was very grateful that I had God during that time. Had not I had God to depend on, I would not have made it through.

Believing in the power of prayer
I began believing in the power of prayer as a young girl, after entering the foster care system and desiring to go back home. It took me seeing my mother walking around our home constantly praying that had a direct influence on me as a child.
When I found myself going through the toughest time in my life (foster care), I mimicked my mother and relied on prayer. No one taught me how to pray, and I had no idea if I was even praying correctly. All I knew was that I believed God heard me every time I prayed, and I prayed almost every night that my life would get better.
It took many years for it to get better, but ultimately it did and I began seeing my prayers being answered. I prayed for very specific things and, that’s when I knew God was real and prayer could bring the changes I desired to see.
So, never give up on prayer. Just because you don’t see things getting better immediately doesn’t mean that God doesn’t hear you and isn’t working behind the scenes on your behalf. Because He is.
Even Daniel, who had a lot of divine favor, had to wait to get answered prayers because of the spiritual warfare that was happening behind the scenes.
Sometimes we never know why there’s a delay in answered prayers, but one thing I can assure you is that everything happens for a reason. We may not always know why, hence Daniel, but there’s always a valid reason whether we know it or not. We just have to trust God in the process.
The Power of Prayer Examples in the Bible
There are more prayer examples in the Bible, but I’ll quickly cover these three examples.
- Solomon– When Solomon became king of Israel, he knew he lacked wisdom to lead the entire nation, so he sought God in prayer and asked for wisdom and discernment so he could lead God’s people. God granted his prayer and Solomon was known as the wisest man to ever live.
- David (Psalm 143)– David’s prayer about needing rescuing from the Lord when his enemies were against him David’s prayer was obviously answered because he later went on to become the king of Israel.
- Jabez – In 1 Chronicles 4:10, Jabez prayed and asked God to expand his territory and to keep him safe. God heard him and answered his prayer.
