It’s really easy to have faith when things are going well, but the author (King David) expresses his die-hard faith in God when things are going horribly wrong. His Psalm is a reminder not to operate in fear, but rather full assurance in God despite how bad life’s circumstances get.
As humans we tend to experience anxiety, fear, and discouragement when we’re going through a difficult time. However, Psalm 27 teaches us to have and keep our faith in the Lord during our hardest time in life.
Having faith in the Lord is essential to being able to communicate to Him in prayer. Without faith in Him, prayers will be ignored.
Here’s a helpful breakdown of Psalm 27 to give you a better understanding of just how powerful it is:
Verse 1: Here David acknowledges that the Lord delivers him from danger and destruction, so that he’s not operating out of a place of fear.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall, I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid?”
Verses 2-3: Here David confidently declares that all who are against him, will not succeed in their mission to take him down, because God is with him.
“When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.”
Verses 4-5: Here David shows his sheer reliance on God in the day of trouble.
“One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble, he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.”
Verse 6: Here he gives praise to the Lord because he dominated his enemies.
“Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy. I will sing and make music to the LORD.”
Verses 7-10: Here he expresses his undying everlasting need for the Lord to be present with him, because he knows that the Lord is his help and the only one who can successfully get him through his hard times.
“Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek.
Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me O God my Savior.
Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.”
Verses 11-14: Here David shows he’s very confident that God will intervene and prevail in his situation despite his enemies efforts.
“Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.
Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes. For false witnesses rise up against me breathing out violence.
I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”
How can I apply psalm 27 to my life?
To apply Psalm 27 to your life, first start with reading it daily. Reading the scripture daily allows it to marinate in your mind as a starting point for reflection.
Reflection helps you understand the scripture in ways that weren’t as obvious before. Certain parts of the scripture will start to make more sense and carry a deeper meaning.
You’ll start to perceive it differently. As you begin to routinely read Psalm 27 and reflect on it, and its words will eventually become instilled in your heart.
